🎯 Still Boycotting Target? Here's Why They Were at Essence Fest Anyway

🎯 Still Boycotting Target? Here's Why They Were at Essence Fest Anyway

Let’s be clear: Target didn’t just pop up at the Essence Festival 2025—they had every legal right to be there. But that doesn’t mean we have to forget what happened… or stop holding them accountable.

πŸ›️ So, Why Was Target at Essence Fest?

Simple: money talks—and contracts shout.

Target is a multi-year major sponsor of the Essence Festival of Culture, the iconic celebration of Black joy, music, and excellence curated by Essence magazine. That sponsorship means they didn’t just set up a table—they were all over it. Stages, programming, curated events, booths—you name it, they branded it.

In fact, 2025 marked the fourth consecutive year Target has activated at Essence, showcasing everything from Black-owned brands to volunteer initiatives. Their presence was strategic, colorful, and deeply tied to the festival’s funding.

πŸ“Έ The Instagram Post Heard 'Round the Internet

After attendees started asking why a company facing backlash was so visible at a Black-centered event, Essence’s team took to Instagram. Their message? “We fully understand how it looks.” But they doubled down on one thing: a contractual obligation. Translation? "We signed the deal. The check cleared. We're locked in."

πŸ”₯ The Backlash Is Still Real

Let’s not forget why the #BoycottTarget movement started in the first place. After years of championing DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), Target made headlines in 2023 and 2024 for quietly rolling back those initiatives. Folks noticed—and weren’t having it.

So when Target showed up at Essence Fest, it felt like a slap in the face to many. How can a brand backpedaling on DEI be front and center at one of the Blackest events of the year? It felt tone-deaf, performative, and yes, messy.

πŸ’Ό What Essence Had to Say

Essence organizers acknowledged the criticism but emphasized reality: big festivals require big sponsors. And like it or not, Target’s funding supports everything from artist performances to community workshops. This isn’t a dollar store operation—Essence Fest is a machine, and corporate partners keep the gears turning.

But here's the problem: When the culture moves forward, our sponsors should too.

✅ So, Do We Still Boycott Target?

Yes. Sponsorship doesn’t equal accountability. A booth doesn’t fix betrayal. And branded T-shirts don’t erase the choices Target made when it thought no one was watching.

Support Black businesses. Shop intentionally. And hold every brand—even the ones dancing on our stages—to a higher standard.

Because if the culture is going to show up, the corporations cashing in need to show up too.
